About Derek Klatt
Derek is a thoughtful and precise advocate. Above all else, he prioritizes practical and effective solutions to workplace problems. He understands the needs of both employers and employees and the harmony that must be struck in the employment relationship. Derek is an effective communicator and skilled problem solver. He takes complex legal matters and distills the most critical parts into easily digestible information, often while he works with the parties to resolve matters before litigation becomes necessary. However, litigation is an essential component to the legal system and Derek has acted as counsel in a variety of matters including before various Ontario courts, the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario, the Ontario Labour Relations Board, and at private grievance arbitration.
Throughout his career, Derek has guided employers and employees alike. Before starting Derek Klatt Law in 2022, he worked at leading boutique and national employment & labour law firms in downtown Toronto. Today, Derek focuses on workplace investigations of all types. As both legal counsel and a licensed private investigator, he has a deep appreciation for the nuances and significance of evidence. Derek utilizes traditional legal frameworks when conducting workplace investigations but also applies creative or the “outside-the-box” thinking often associated with private investigators when it comes to the collection of evidence.
Derek earned his Juris Doctor from Queen’s University, Faculty of Law in 2017 and was called to the Law Society of Ontario in 2018.
